Nielsen Company das erste Panel einführte. Dieses Panel war ein klassisches Handelspanel. Seitdem wird das Panelverfahren in allen wirtschaftlich bedeutenden Ländern eingesetzt und dient als Instrument der konstanten Marktanalyse. In immer mehr Branchen werden Panels genutzt, um die bestehenden Märkte zu beobachten bzw. um die Attraktivität neuer Märkte zu ermitteln. Der große Vorteil der Panels liegt darin, dass aufgrund des Erhebungsverfahrens keine methodischen Verzerrungen entstehen. Auf sich schnell ändernden Märkten ist besonders wichtig, laufende Veränderungen und neue Entwicklungen zu analysieren und zu dokumentieren. Dies hat dazu geführt, dass die Panelverfahren in den letzten Jahrzehnten an Bedeutung gewonnen haben und in der Praxis eine immer häufigere Anwendung finden. In keinem anderen Bereich der sozialwissenschaftlichen Forschung werden Panels so zahlreich eingesetzt wie in der Marktforschung. Sie stellen somit ein wichtiges Instrument der Markt-forschung dar.

Ein Panel ist eine Erhebung, die in wiederkehrenden Zeitabständen bei einer immer gleich bleibenden Stichprobe durchgeführt wird. Es gilt als eine zuverlässige Informationsquelle für innovatives Marketingmanagement. 4 Da die Panelerhebungen mit einem großen Organisationsaufwand und hohen Kosten verbunden sind, werden sie meist von Marktforschungsinstituten durchgeführt. Marktforschungsinstitute bieten eine Reihe von Untersuchungsverfahren an. Ein beträchtlicher Teil ihres gesamten Umsatzes wird durch die Panelverfahren erzielt, wobei die entstehenden Kosten durch den Verkauf der Daten an ihre Auftraggeber gedeckt werden.
