Hermann Hesse nasce a Calw nel Wüttemberg nel 1877. Dopo i primi romanzi di tradizione romantica (Peter Camenzind e Sotto la ruota, 1906), un viaggio in India crea le premesse dell’incontro con la spiritualità orientale, testimoniato in Siddhartha (1922). A causa del suo fragile equilibrio nervoso, Hesse entra in contatto con la psicanalisi di Jung, esperienza che lascerà tracce nei successivi romanzi (Demian, Il lupo nella steppa, 1927), mentre più sereni e raffinati saranno gli ultimi libri: Narciso e Boccadoro (1930) e Il gioco delle perle di vetro (1943). Nel 1946 riceve il Premio Nobel per la letteratura. Muore a Montagnola presso Lugano nel 1962. Nel 1977 sono state pubblicate postume le Poesie.
La sua opera è stata tradotta in 40 lingue e 12 dialetti indiani e ancora oggi continua ad affascinare intere generazioni di lettori in tutto il mondo.
