Lorsque, comme une aile d'alcyon, le navire se fut effacé au loin, que la mer fût redevenue solitaire, je me laissai tomber sur le sol en proie à un sombre désespoir, accusant le ciel de mon malheur et résolu à mourir plutôt que de rester esclave des barbares aux mains desquels j'étais tombé. Chose étrange! Ce navire, dont je pleurais d'être séparé, était condamné à subir un sort plus horrible encore que celui qui m'attendait parmi les sauvages, et sa fin devait être enveloppée d'un mystère impénétrable. Ainsi que je l'appris plus tard, à mon retour en France, on ne reçut jamais aucunes nouvelles de lui ni des hommes qui le montaient. Sans doute, comme tant d'autres, hélas! Surpris par le brouillard, il aura heurté une banquise, et son vaillant équipage aura été enseveli sous les flots glacés de la mer Polaire! Dieu, dont les desseins sont impénétrables à la raison humaine, voulait donc, en me séparant ainsi brusquement de mes compagnons, me sauver de la mort terrible à laquelle il les avait condamnés! Mais alors tout entier à ma douleur, ne songeant qu'à l'affreuse position dans laquelle je me trouvais tout à coup jeté, et à celle plus affreuse encore, sans doute, à laquelle me réservaient les sauvages féroces dont j'étais si fatalement devenu l'esclave, je me tordais sur le sable de la plage avec des cris de douleur impuissante et des hurlements de bête fauve.
