Gewandert wurde zwar immer in der Geschichte, doch selten war Migration derart prägend wie in den westeuropäischen postindustriellen Gesellschaften seit den ausgehenden 1950er Jahren. Noch gibt es Restriktionen, doch langfristig fördert die erweiterte Europäische Union Wanderungsbewegungen von Arbeitskräften innerhalb des gemeinsamen Marktes. Disparitäten in der wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung der Regionen Europas führten und führen zu erheblichen Bevölkerungsverschiebungen innerhalb der Staaten und europaweit. Doch nicht nur die Migranten werden mit dem Fremden konfrontiert. Auch wer zu Hause bleibt, muss sich mit dem Thema auseinandersetzen. Zuwanderung und Differenz als Chance zu begreifen, kann dabei helfen, den Herausforderungen der Zukunft erfolgreich zu begegnen. Abschottung führt hingegen zu Stagnation und Konflikten. Um eine sachdienliche wissenschaftliche Debatte anzuschieben, widmete das Institut für Volkskunde der Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg mit dem Studiengang Europäische Ethnologie vier Tagungen den Themenkreisen Fremdheit und Migration.
