Martine Cadière vit entre Waterloo et le Périgord Noir. Auteure et conférencière, elle est membre de l’Association des Écrivains belges et de l’Association des Conférenciers de langue française. Elle écrit essentiellement des romans policiers contemporains dont le sujet est toujours une femme mythique, qui a des combats à mener et des idées à défendre. C’est Ange Mattéi, un gendarme Corse, malin, extraordinairement courtois et très épris de sa femme, qui dirige les enquêtes.

Tout a commencé le jour où Maxence Pelissier a exigé d’occuper la Treille Muscate au mois de juillet. Madame Chotard, la responsable commerciale de l’agence, m’avait prévenue. L’été, les nantis qui louent une villa dans le golfe de Saint-Tropez sont toujours arrogants et mauvais payeurs. Toujours. Et s’ils ont l’air normaux ou affables, il faut se méfier, redoubler d’attention et tout vérifier. Et je sais que le jour du départ, avant de leur remettre la caution, il conviendra de prendre son temps et d’éplucher tous les postes un par un.

Mais pour l’heure, les locataires viennent à peine d’arriver. Et depuis que j’attends debout sur la terrasse, alors qu’il est plus de midi et qu’il fait une chaleur d’Afrique, je me dis que Madame Chotard a diablement raison. J’ai soif mais plutôt mourir que de mendier un verre d’eau à ces gens, un couple de Parisiens chics aux narines pincées, sans enfants. Ils vont et viennent, ouvrent le frigidaire, inspectent les chambres, le jardin, la piscine. Ils n’en finissent pas de sortir les valises des voitures et de fureter partout et, moi, je suis bien obligée d’attendre le chèque de garantie et de relever les compteurs. À plusieurs reprises, je me suis retrouvée sur leur chemin, mais ils ne m’accordent pas un regard. Je suis idiote de ne pas m’asseoir, mais, debout, il me semble que je contrôle mieux la situation. Puisque je suis condamnée à cuire et à patienter, et que personne ne m’adresse la parole, je reste donc en conversation silencieuse avec les buis et les lézards. Mais je garde les épaules dégagées, la tête haute et l’attitude professionnelle. Pas question de me laisser aller.
