Not illustrated. 1915 Excerpt: ...picture is making its presence felt by an unusual call for ten or fifteen copies of a single title to supply a temporary demand at a branch during the production of the play at a neighboring theatre. Even the phonograph record made its influence felt when a reader came with a request for "Clancy's Wedding." Unfortunately he could not be gratified. Eighty-five short lists on special subjects were compiled for readers who, though unable to consult the union catalogue at the Central Building, were desirous of knowing what material was available at the branches. An amusing request was for a "list of people who have given up their work to do gardening in its advanced stages." Another, rather difficult to satisfy, was for a "list of notables now dead who have done wonderful work in different arts in spite of bodily affliction." Reading Rooms The attendance in the reading room for adults in the branches was 1,267,879, an increase of 176,263 over 1913. The heaviest use of reading rooms was at the Hamilton Fish Park and Seward Park Branches on the lower east side, and the 96th Street Branch on the upper east side. Until October the reading rooms in the Hamilton Fish Park, Seward Park, and Yorkville Branches were kept open for an extra hour, but owing to lack of funds the rooms have since had to be closed for this additional hour at both the Hamilton Fish Park and Yorkville Branches. At the Seward Park Branch the use of reference books in the reading room has been so great that the room has been kept open until 10 p. m.
