New economic geography bedeutet die zunehmende Vernetzung der einzelnen Industriezweige. Unter Netzwerken ist das Eingehen und der Ausbau von wirtschaftlichen, wissenschaftlichen und kulturellen Kontakten aller Art gemeint. Diese Kontakte haben zum Ziel den Wissenshorizont der einzelnen Akteure zu erweitern, um somit die Fertigungs- und Entwicklungskosten zu senken und den wirtschaftlichen Erfolg zu fördern. Die Determinante der neuen Ökonomie in Bezug auf die Geographie bedeutet eine Fortsetzung der seit der Industrialisierung im 18. Jahrhundert verfolgten Standortwahl. Standortfaktoren sind die Vorgaben, die ein Unternehmen veranlassen an einem bestimmten Ort seine Fabrikation anzusiedeln. Hierbei spielen eine Menge Faktoren, zum Beispiel Nähe zum Kunden oder Lieferanten eine wichtige Rolle. Dadurch, dass zum Einen die Fertigung und Entwicklung von neuen Produkten, oder damit verbundene Dienstleistungen immer komplexer werden, wurden auch die Standortfaktoren immer reichhaltiger und variantenreicher. Zudem bestimmen sie bei der wachsenden internationalen Konkurrenz den Erfolg oder Misserfolg des Weges von der Geschäftsidee hin zum erfolgreichen Unternehmen.
